Caring for someone living with dementia can be deeply rewarding, but it can also be tiring and, at times, overwhelming. If you're supporting a loved one at home, here are a few gentle approaches that can help day-to-day life feel calmer for everyone.

Keep to a routine

Familiar routines and surroundings help reduce confusion and anxiety. Try to keep mealtimes, personal care and activities at roughly the same time each day.

Communicate with patience

Speak clearly and calmly, give one instruction at a time, and allow plenty of time for a response. If your loved one becomes distressed, it often helps to gently change the subject or the surroundings rather than correct them.

Focus on what they can do

Encourage independence where it's safe to do so. Being involved in small, familiar tasks helps maintain dignity and a sense of purpose.

Make the home dementia-friendly

Good lighting, clear labels, removing trip hazards and keeping familiar objects in sight can all make a real difference.

Look after yourself too

You can only care well for someone else if you're supported yourself. Accepting help – whether from family, friends or a professional care team – isn't giving up; it's making sure your loved one gets consistent, patient care while you rest.

At Helpful Hearts, our mental-health-nursing background means we're experienced in supporting people living with dementia to stay safe and comfortable in their own homes, with patient, consistent care. To talk about how we can help, call 07308 887488 or email welcome@helpfulhearts.uk.
